Pranayama (breathing techniques) calm and strengthen the mind and generate a store of energy (prana) in the body. Do not continue with pranayama if the lungs tire or if there is fatigue or irritation. Note : pranayama should only be attempted when the body, nervous system and lungs have been strengthened by asana practice. Breathing has a powerful effect on the brain and nervous system, so start gradually.
Meditation acts as a form of cleansing, detaching yourself from your thoughts and reducing tension. It improves circulation, can lower blood pressure and induces deep relaxation.
Yoga Philosophy teaches a positive attitude and self discipline, focusing on the present moment, speaking sincerely, acting rather than re-acting, replacing resentment with forgiveness, violence with peace and unhappiness with joy. Yoga provides the systematic steps of joining the individual soul (Atman) with the universal soul (Param Atman). For a more in-depth look at philosophy, may I suggest the following books :
- Patanjali's Yoga Sutras
- Bhagavad Gita
- Hatha Yoga Pradipika
- Light on Yoga
- Good Company (anthology of sayings, stories, answers)
- Autobiography of a Yogi - Paramahansa Yogananda
